Established through the generosity of the Koo family, this annual award is given to ASU undergraduate students who excel in Korean language, literature, or culture. Judith Radke Award in Translation 

This award recognizes outstanding translations done by graduate students at ASU, either in their coursework or outside of it. Translators must be registered in a degree-seeking graduate program in the School of International Letters and Cultures. Translations must be from a scholarly or literary work into English. However, the source language need not be the language of the program in which an applicant is registered. 

Translations will be evaluated based on the quality of the English, faithfulness of the translation and the significance of the source text.

Spanish Linguistics Award 

This award is given to the most outstanding Ph.D. student with a focus in Spanish linguistics. Criteria for selection include progress to degree and toward professional goals, quality of performance in linguistics classes, GPA, and professional activities (presentations/publications). Candidates for the award should have completed at least five semesters of their program.

David Raúl Foster Latin American Publishing Award 

The recipient must be involved in innovative and unusual research on Latin America, including Brazilian Studies. Preference shall be given to students working in the areas of gender studies, queer studies, masculinity studies, disability studies and non-Jewish, nonindigenous ethnic groups in Latin America. The Donor recognizes that funds are available elsewhere at ASU for these areas.

Global Spanish-Chinese Grant 

The Chinese and Spanish language programs are pleased to offer a grant in support of Spanish graduate students who are studying Chinese. The grant offers $1000 per year for a graduate student from the Spanish program who maintains continuous enrollment in one of our Chinese language courses. The grant may be repeated. The recipient must maintain continuous enrollment in a Chinese language class with a grade of B or better. Preference will be given to those involved in the Spanish in China initiative.

ASU StarTalk to Flagship 2016 (FOR HIGH SCHOOLERS)
ASU Chinese Language Summer Camp: From STARTALK to Flagship offers a 15-day intensive program for motivated current 8th-12th graders who are Arizona residents. This program provides a great opportunity for both heritage and non-heritage learners to explore and expand their knowledge in Chinese language.

JET (The Japan Exchange and Teaching Program)
Is a Japanese government sponsored program, provides opportunities for recent graduates to work full time as an Assistant Language Teacher (ALT) at an elementary, junior high or high school, or to work as Coordinator for International Relations (CIR) at local governments to engage in internationalization activities and translation/interpretation. There are two new elite fellowship programs at China’s two premier universities in Beijing:Schwarzman Scholars, a one year fully funded masters at Tsinghua in public policy, economics and business, or international studies. Academy, a one year fully funded masters at Peking University in China Studies.

Taiwan Government Scholarships
The government of Taiwan has scholarships, such as the Ministry of Education’s Huayu Enrichment Scholarship (HES), for Chinese language study at universities in Taiwan. Rotary International also provides study opportunities in Taiwan and other nations with Rotary branches. U.S. Department of State Student Internship Program (Unpaid)
This unpaid program, for students with a minimum of 60 credit hours or greater, provides the opportunity to work in U.S. Embassies and Consulates throughout the world, as well as in various bureaus located in Washington, D.C. and at Department offices spread around the United States. This unpaid program is designed to provide substantive experiences in a Foreign Affairs environment.

Pathways Internship Program (Paid)
The U.S. Department of State’s Pathways Internship Program includes both the Internship Temporary Program (ITEP) and the Internship Experience Program (IEP). Both programs are targeted toward U.S. citizens enrolled in a wide variety of educational institutions from high school to graduate school and professional academic levels. Both programs provide students with opportunities to explore Federal careers while being paid for the work performed.

Critical Languages Institute (CLI) at ASU

The SITE Program (Study, Intercultural Training and Experience) is a paid internship program for English Teaching Assistants in the schools of Lombardy, Italy. It is an excellent opportunity for students or new graduates who wish to get a better understanding of the Italian language and culture while assisting the Italian teachers in their work. The program is open to B.A. students who are currently completing or have recently completed (within the last 18 months) college-level Italian language and culture programs. 

Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE): Italy
ASU partners with CIEE to offer semester and academic-year programs in Ferrara, Italy. This program offers homestays and the opportunity for advanced students to take courses at the University of Ferrara.  CIEE also offers scholarships

in Germany provides an excellent opportunity for students to gain valuable international work skills, improve German language abilities, and experience German life and culture firsthand.

Alexander von Humboldt Foundation’s German Chancellor Fellowship
The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation's German Chancellor Fellowship is a prestigious fellowship and the alumni of the program typically have gone on to very successful careers. It allows you to conduct an independent project at a host institution, in cooperation with a host in Germany you have selected for one year. The project should involve original exploration of a topic or issue or research in your respective field of interest. Projects should be of relevance to modern societies, have a long-term and visible impact, and help to advance your career and professional development. Through your experience in Germany, you will acquire greater knowledge of your fields, gain new international experience, and strengthen your intercultural competence — all essential qualities for future professional leaders.

Russian Flagship Program
The Overseas Russian Flagship provides undergraduate students enrolled at Domestic Russian Flagship Programs an opportunity for intensive, professional language training and development, as well as direct enrollment at Al-Farabi Kazakh National University in Almaty, Kazakhstan. The Overseas Program also accepts a limited number of post-BA and graduate students, working professionals, and heritage speakers already at the Advanced-Mid or Advanced-High language level (2-2+). The program also offers a comprehensive study of all aspects of contemporary Russian life and culture.

Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey         
Summer Language Scholarships for students admitted to graduate degree programs at Monterey for Fall 2015, to study intermediate Russian, covers tuition, room and board at the Middlebury Language Schools program, or tuition only for the Monterey Institute Summer Intensive Language Program (SILP). Kathryn Davis Fellowships for Peace, for students admitted to graduate degree programs at Monterey for Fall 2016, to study intermediate Russian, for tuition, room and board to attend the Middlebury summer Language Schools. Veterans benefits cover tuition. Alumni of Peace Corps, AmeriCorps, City Year, Fulbright, JET and other programs are eligible for guaranteed scholarship awards.

U.S. Department of State Student Internship Program
Unpaid internships for 8-10 weeks in spring, summer, and fall are available with the U.S. State Department overseas, in the U.S. Embassy in Moscow, and around the world. It includes an intensive 1-2 weeks of Russian language study in Tver. Course credit may be available. Summer is very competitive and you have a better chance in spring or fall. Immersion programs in St. Petersburg, with homestays, peer tutors, volunteering opportunities, excursions, and cultural events. Classes and electives in Russian literature, culture, and politics are in Russian. Costs: $18,850 semester, $33,700 AY, plus airfare and personal expenses New CIEE LIFT scholarship for academic-year students of Arabic, Japanese, Chinese, Portuguese, or Russian, of a minimum of $5,000. CIEE GAIN scholarship for economic need of $1,500 to pay for plane ticket. Ping Scholarships for students with GPA of 3.8 or higher excelling in socially important areas of study. CIEE Gilman Go Global Grants for Gilman Scholarship students with demonstrated need for airfare.

Alfa Fellowship Program
The Alfa Fellowship Program is a distinguished professional development program placing accomplished young professionals in work assignments at leading organizations in the fields of business, economics, journalism, law, public policy, and related areas in Russia. The program accepts up to 18 American, British, and German citizens per year. The program includes intensive Russian language training, seminar series, and extended professional experience. Fellows receive a monthly stipend, language training, coverage of all program-related travel costs, housing, and insurance. The Alfa Fellowship Program aims to expand networks of American, British, German, and Russian professionals, develop greater intercultural understanding, and advance knowledge of Russia in the West.

Competitive Scholarships

Fulbright

The Fulbright US Student Program funds several types of grants. The two main types of grants are Academic grants and English Teaching Assistantship (ETA) grants. One may only apply for one type of grant per application cycle. Students applying for Academic (aka "Study/Research") grants design their own academic projects and typically audit courses at and/or complete projects under the supervision of faculty members at foreign universities. Projects typically involve formal (i.e. classroom) study, directed study, independent research, or some combination of all three. Students may also apply for grants to support projects in the creative and performing arts. Students who receive an ETA grant are placed in a classroom and assist teachers of English to non-native English speakers. ETA recipients also serve as cultural ambassadors. Specific requirements of ETA grants also vary by country. 

Boren Award for International Study

The Boren Awards program does have certain preferences for languages of study, countries of study, and duration of study.  Generally speaking, applicants are expected to study a non-Western European language that is commonly taught in the US, and Boren Scholarships and Fellowships promote long-term linguistic and cultural immersion, and therefore study abroad proposals for two or more semesters are strongly encouraged. Preference will be given to undergraduate applicants proposing a full-year academic study.

Requirements: The award recipient must work for one year (beginning within three years of graduation) in the Federal Government in a position with national security responsibilities, or any element of the Intelligence Community, or in a position with national security responsibilities in any Federal department or agency. 

Blakemore Foundation Fellowships

Blackmore Freeman Fellowships fund one year of advanced language study at the Inter-University Center for Japanese Language Studies in Yokohama, the Inter-University Program for Chinese Language Studies at Tsinghua University in Beijing, the International Chinese Language Program at National Taiwan University in Taipei, and similar programs in other countries of East and SE Asia. Where there is no structured advanced-level language program at an educational institution in the country, the grant may provide for the financing of private tutorials under terms set forth in the application instructions. Critical Language Scholarship Program (CLS)

The Program provides overseas foreign language instruction and cultural enrichment experiences in 13 different languages. The CLS Program is part of a U.S. government effort to expand dramatically the number of Americans studying and mastering critical-need foreign languages. Students of diverse disciplines and majors are encouraged to apply. Languages offered: Arabic, Azerbaijani, Bangla, Chinese, Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Persian, Punjabi, intermediate and advanced Russian, Swahili, Turkish, and Urdu. Students from all academic disciplines, including business, engineering, law, medicine, sciences, and humanities are encouraged to apply. Participants are expected to continue their language study beyond the scholarship period and later apply their critical language skills in their professional careers. Please consult with Prof. Donald Livingston (Russian) about your essays for the CLS because he has experience judging applications.

Eligibility:

  • All applicants must be U.S. citizens, currently enrolled in a U.S. degree-granting program (undergraduate or graduate), Current undergraduate students must have completed at least one year of general college course-work by program start date
  • Applicants must be in acceptable mental and physical health. Grantees will be required to submit a satisfactory Medical Information Form and Physician’s Statement.
  • Applicants must be 18 years old by the beginning of the CLS Program.
  • Applicants must be at the appropriate level of foreign language proficiency (varies by country).

Thomas R. Pickering Graduate Foreign Affairs Fellowship

Funded by the U.S. Department of State and administered by The Washington Center for Internships and Academic Seminars, the Thomas R. Pickering Fellowship Program provides undergraduate and graduate students with financial support, mentoring and professional development to prepare them academically and professionally for a career in the U.S. Department of State Foreign Service. Women, members of minority groups historically underrepresented in the Foreign Service, and students with financial need are encouraged to apply.

Benefits: 

  • Undergraduate candidates: Up to $37,500 annually for tuition, room and board, books, mandatory fees and some travel expenses for the senior year of undergraduate studies, and first year of a master’s degree in fields related to the Foreign Service such as business administration, economics, public policy, international affairs, and other relevant fields.
  • Graduate candidates: Up to $37,500 annually for tuition, room and board, books, mandatory fees and some travel expenses for a two-year master’s degree in fields related to the Foreign Service such as business administration, economics, public policy, international affairs, and other relevant fields.
  • Two summer internships, one at a domestic office of the Department of State in Washington, D.C. and one overseas at a U.S. embassy or consulate. The program provides stipends, transportation and housing for these internships.
  • Orientation to the Program and the Foreign Service at the Department of State.
  • Mentoring from a Foreign Service Officer throughout the duration of the fellowship.
  • Employment in the Department of State Foreign Service for those who successfully complete the program and Foreign Service entry requirements.

Award Requirements: 

Pickering Fellowship recipients accept a minimum five year service commitment in the Department of State's Foreign Service. The five year service commitment begins upon entry into the Foreign Service.

Application Process: 

The Pickering Fellowship has both an undergraduate and graduate program. Pickering Undergraduate applicants must apply as rising seniors; Graduate applicants must be seeking admission to a two-year master’s degree program.

  • Two letters of recommendation

Finalists will be invited to interview in April, with fellowship offers made shortly thereafter.  Pickering Fellowship recipients will attend a mandatory orientation in June.

Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship

U.S. State Dept. program for Federal Pell Grant recipients. Over 2,300 scholarships of up to $5,000 will be awarded this academic year for U.S. citizen undergraduates to study abroad. Award amounts vary depending on the length of study and student need with the average award being approximately $4,000. Recipients are eligible for an additional $3,000 Critical Need Language Award (including Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Russian) for a total possible award of up to $8,000. Students can apply for and receive both Boren and Gilman scholarships, and the final award cannot exceed the program cost. ASU had 37 Gilmans (2018-19), beating University of Arizona (18).

NSA Summer Language Program 
Completely paid internship in Arabic, Chinese, Farsi, Korean, and Russian for 12 weeks beginning in the summer after your sophomore year. Apprentice with language analysts. You must be a U.S. citizen, able to get a security clearance, with a minimum 3.0 GPA (3.5 GPA or higher preferred).
