SILC Learning Support Services (LSS) offers a wide range of services to faculty in the School of International Letters & Cultures. From consultation to technical support to media production, LSS is dedicated to your success and that of your students.

Facilities

Learning Support Services offers access to a number of different spaces designed to support instruction. From lectures and media presentations to individual and group work to collaboration and videoconferencing, LSS can provide a space to meet your needs and those of your students. See descriptions of our spaces and up-to-the-minute calendars for each of them at our Facilities page. Reserve one of these spaces for a class or group meeting using our Facilities Reservation Request Form.

Technology

The effective use of technology is critical to your success as an instructor and to that of your students. LSS can offer you and your students workshops, individual and small group consultations on the use of appropriate technologies to support your instruction and their learning. Class sessions held in LSS spaces can include introductions to software and techniques that will allow your students to develop and demonstrate 21st-century skills.

LSS also provides support for online and hybrid instruction through its Online Instructional Support (OIS) team. Members of this group respond to faculty and student requests for help with the use of Canvas, publisher course sites, and other tools and environments for online learning. OIS staff also offer face-to-face workshops for faculty to learn new techniques for hybrid and online teaching. The workshop schedule can be found on the Teaching Support and Workshops web page.

Printing

You and your students are eligible to print from SILC LSS computer classrooms (DH61 and DH65A). For each undergraduate enrollment, faculty and students receive a $5.00 print quota -- 50 single-sided pages or approximately 70 double-sided pages. Graduate course enrollments receive $15.00. This is one of the most tangible benefits your students receive for their course fee; please take time to let them know that it exists.

Students and faculty can purchase more quota in $2.00, $5.00, or $10.00 increments at the Circulation/Information window in LL66.

Consulting

The field of technology is vast and constantly changing. At times, this can be overwhelming when you're making decisions about what to use to improve instructional outcomes. We can help you navigate the complexities of choosing resources and tools, and work with you to apply them effectively to your curriculum. SILC LSS professional staff and Online Instructional Support team members have, collectively, decades of experience in teaching and in using technologies to teach and learn.

We offer workshops to faculty, faculty associates and teaching assistants during the semester, and special events including facilitators from outside ASU. Online Instructional Support Associates are available throughout the year, and we participate in new faculty and graduate student orientations. We're always available to meet with faculty to discuss needs and seek solutions.

Media and Software

Culture is transmitted through many different media, among them print, theatrical performance, fine art, and film. SILC Learning Support Services maintains a growing media library (primarily DVD-based) of international film. Our online patron access catalog (OPAC) is located at Online Public Access Catalog for LSS at SILC. Faculty may request the purchase of media materials via our webform at LSS Media Purchase Request.

Learning Support Services makes streamed film and other video materials available within educational fair use guidelines via ASU's course management system (Canvas). Request streamed material for instruction via our webform at LSS Streamed Media Request.

Requests to purchase and distribute audio materials may be made by e-mail to silclss@asu.edu, since these usually involve negotiation and licensing with the publisher.

Learning Support Services will also purchase and install software in support of SILC courses and programs, within the constraints of budget and sustainability. Contact us with questions and requests at silclss@asu.edu.
